“My brother Paul is a 73-year-old who has lived in care for a large part of his life, after spending his first 25 years at home with our parents. He’s predominantly been in state government-run houses.

“He’s lived at his current address for over 15 years, and my parents were very much involved with his care until they passed. I have taken on this role since their passing.

“I’ve been very happy with the support my brother has received from Gavin, Amie and their team over the last seven or so years they have been running his house. They were incredible in ensuring he got the support he required when he broke his hip a number of years ago and always keep me informed of any changes regarding his health or support needs. They also regularly arrange train trips for him, recently to Dungog on an old steam train, and he loved it.

My husband was diagnosed with younger onset Alzheimer’s dementia at age 62. We met with Amie from HEDSS at our home to discuss possible supports, particularly social interaction for my husband.

He served in the Australian army for 26 years, worked in the Department of Defence for another 10 years and was a volunteer firefighter. Amie, Gavin and their team have made a very stressful and emotionally difficult time so much easier to cope with.

She matched my husband with three support workers who are so well-trained and treat him with respect while allowing him to continue to be a part of the community. He enjoys going to the airforce base, museum, Fort Scratchley, Hunter Zoo, movies and bookshops.

While he was still at home, Amie organised people to help us here until he went into respite care. She sourced a suitable house for him very quickly and has helped in so many ways, including advice on NDIS matters, suggestions for appropriate outings and community activities, recommended a wonderful Coordinator of Supports and OT, but above all else, she continues to support us every step of the way and always has time to listen.

My husband’s dementia has progressed to the extent that he won’t be coming home. Amie is assisting us with the arduous process of securing long-term supported independent living. She liaises with the accommodation providers to ensure that my husband is given every opportunity to live the best life possible at every stage of his dementia.

I can honestly say that Amie has changed our lives for the better, and we would have really struggled without Amie and the support guys, who my husband calls his mates. Her energy and her commitment to providing consistent care and support to people who desperately need it is simply the best.

We’ve worked closely together with HEDSS supporting participants associated with both our organisations.
